GIS: Crowd simulation comes to ArcGIS
Urban planners can now simulate crowd movement directly in ArcGIS, allowing them to predict pedestrian bottlenecks and design safer, more efficient public spaces before they are built.
Hello! Today is Friday and here’s your end-of-week-catch-up on all things geospatial.
Crowd simulation comes to ArcGIS. Urban planners can now predict pedestrian flow and potential bottlenecks directly within their GIS. A new integration between Esri and uCrowds brings the SimCrowds tool into the ArcGIS ecosystem.
The mathematical foundations of Urban Planning. A comprehensive list of the key equations that shape our cities has been shared, covering everything from the Alonso Land Rent Model and Zipf’s Rank-Size Law to formulas for measuring urban heat islands and land-use diversity.
ArcGIS Pro 3.6 released. The latest update to ArcGIS Pro is now available, featuring the ability to set a single time zone for an entire map, add layers to the legend from the context menu, and a new tool for comparing geodatabase schemas more efficiently.
New tool ranks heat risk like hurricanes. CallHeatScore, a first-of-its-kind system that ranks heat risk on a 0-4 scale, similar to hurricane categories. The scores are provided at the ZIP code level to help communities understand and prepare for dangerous temperatures.
Tell interactive stories with ArcGIS Earth bookmarks. A new tutorial demonstrates how to use bookmark groups in ArcGIS Earth to create animations and presentations, which can then be exported as KMZ files, images, or videos to share your spatial stories.
Global GIS Day celebrations next week. The annual GIS Day is on November 19th, with the theme "Geo-Generalist Era: Where Spatial Meets Everything." Events include a global Esri webinar on GeoAI frontiers and a local Mapathon in Vienna to celebrate the geospatial community.
GIS Day celebrations & GeoAI webinar next week. The annual GIS Day is on November 19th. A free webinar on "GeoAI Frontiers" will explore trajectory analysis and Large Language Models (LLMs) for the future of autonomous geospatial systems.
Google DeepMind releases high-resolution Global Forest Map. A new, publicly available 10-meter resolution map of the world's natural forests has been released by Google DeepMind, providing an unprecedented detailed view of global forest cover.
Google Maps Platform unleashes AI-powered development. Google announced a suite of new AI tools, including a "Builder agent" that lets you create custom-coded geospatial prototypes using simple conversational language. This "vibe coding" approach aims to drastically accelerate how developers build with Maps, Routes, and Places APIs.
Open-source drone & satellite analysis workshop. A full recording and materials from a 4-hour CANVAS 2025 workshop are now available, teaching how to manage and analyse drone and satellite imagery using the open-source D2S platform, SAMGeo, and GeoAI tools.
ESA launches Sentinel-1D satellite. The European Space Agency successfully launched the Sentinel-1D satellite, the latest unit for its vital Earth observation mission. It can detect ground movement down to a few centimeters, track "dark ships," and see through clouds and hurricanes from its 700 km altitude orbit.
Satellites are now tracking methane "super-emitters". ESA's Sentinel satellites are using a tiered approach (Sentinel-5P, -2, and -3) to pinpoint and quantify major industrial methane leaks globally, right down to the facility level. Dozens of these "super-emitter" plumes are detected and published online each week.
